11月10日(土)、秋桜祭で開催された第22回人見杯英語スピーチコンテストで国際学科1年生の前野恵美さんが見事に優勝しました！
前野さんは審査員、聴衆の心をしっかりと掴み優勝！優勝の副賞として「米国ボストン一週間の旅」が贈られました。

Is Literature the Antithesis of War?
Last year, when I was studying to take my college entrance examinations, I had to write a lot of essays for practice. One of the topics I remember was: “Is literature the antithesis of war?” “Huh??” was my first reaction. I had never thought about the topic before, and I had no idea what it meant.
I did some research and a lot of thinking, and this is what I think. Many people consider literature something like a hobby – something to enjoy when you have the time and the money, just like dessert. But literature is much, much more than that. When people are caught in a war, in constant fear for their lives, suffering from the lack of basic necessities, they have a strong desire for literature. Like art or music, literature is a way for them to regain their sense of humanity. By reading literature, they get back a sense of normalcy, and regain sanity. In this sense, literature celebrates life – a total antithesis of war.
Even for those of us, who are not caught in a war right now, literature is much, much more than just a hobby. By reading literature, we can transcend ourselves, experience so many other lives, learn about reality, know our limitations, and grow as a person. This is why every human culture has had literature and will continue to have it.
However, literature seems to be losing some of its lure, especially among younger generations. According to a recent survey, college students read an average of two and a half books a year. A surprising 31.2% do not read any books outside their classes. The few books they read often do not include any literature. A quick look at the top ten best-sellers by Kinokuniya, one of the nation’s biggest book stores, shows that literature only accounts for two books.
At many universities, the number of students taking literature classes is said to be decreasing. Many students question if literature is of any use when they need to look for a job. Even in many of the university curricula, literature is losing out to more “practical” courses, such as IT skills, presentation skills, and business management, which students feel are “useful” for their future careers.
Literature gives me wings of imagination, and takes me to a fantasy world. But at the same time, literature is about reality. To me it is the best textbook to learn about people at their best and their worst and it is the best educator in the world.
In closing, I’m going to quote a famous writer and philosopher, Tatsuru Uchida. He says that literature is needed in times of crisis when all the systems and knowhow that you have are crumbling under your feet, and conventional wisdom is no longer applicable. Literature, by drawing on the collective wisdom of humanity, empowers you with the ability to survive this chaos.
We live in unpredictable times. The latest IT skills may be obsolete in a few years. Social systems may undergo fundamental changes. With all those changes, however, the only constant is us, humans. Human nature never changes, and the place where we can learn the most about human nature is literature. Depriving younger generations of literature will be the same as giving up on our future.

「文学は戦争の対義語になるか。」小論文の課題で出てきたとき、わたしは「はあ？」と思った。おおよその人は、文学と聞いたら、お金や時間のある、いわば“デザート”のようなものだと思うだろう。しかし、文学にはただの趣味、以上に大きな意味を持つ。人々は戦争の最中、文学を読むことによって、人々は人間性、日常性、正気を取り戻すことができる。そして、文学は生きることをよいものとする。そのために文学は戦争の対義語であるのだ。戦争のさなかにいない私たちにとっても、文学はただの趣味ではない。本を読むことは他人の経験をなぞって自分自身の成長につながるなど、多くの利点がある。そのためすべての文化において文学があり、今も、これからもそうである。しかし最近では特に大学生の中で文学の重要性が減っており、ある調査によると大学生は平均2.5冊しか本を読まないという。大学のカリキュラムでも文学の価値は下がっており、“実用的”な科目への人気が高まっている。しかし、文学は人間のいいところも悪いところも描写する、世界一の教育者である。内田樹に言わせると、文学は人間性のすべてを表すため、今ある知識やシステムが崩壊するカオスな時代にこそ必要なものである、という。私たちは予想できない不安定な時代を生きている。最新の技術はほぼほぼ数年で古いものになるし、現在の社会システムは基板から変わるかもしれない。しかし、これらすべてが変わったとしても、唯一変わらないものは私たち人間である。人間の性質はずっと変わらない。そして、人間について最も理解を深めることができる場所こそが、文学である。次世代を担う若者たちから文学を奪うことは、我々の未来をあきらめることと同じである。
人見杯英語スピーチコンテスト参加して
今回の優勝を経て、スピーチと英語に対する自信がつき、また、自分が持っていた大学コンプレックスも払拭することができました。コーチを行ってくださった柏木先生、オキーフ先生、一緒に出てくれた同級生の二人がいたおかげで、練習へのモチベーションになり、より質の高い練習ができました。スピーチコンテストにおいてかかわってくださったすべての先生方や、友達がいたからこそ優勝できたと思っています。本当にありがとうございました。今回のことは自分にとって本当に大きい出来事でした。これで妥協せず、今後も様々なことに挑戦していきたいです。
