~Second Homestay in Thailand~

～タイでのホームステイ～
Bangkok is a big city filled with good food, products, and people. Thailand has a long history, and there are a lot of interesting places to look at. Most of the people are Buddhism, so I felt the different feeling comparing with Malaysia when I arrived at the port of Thailand.
This time, my host family was older than Malaysian host family. My parents had three daughters who are all older than me, and two of the daughters took me and my homestay mate from Myanmar around.
I had heard that Thailand was a heaven of shopping before I went there. I couldn’t imagine it, but it was real. I went to one of the famous markets in Bangkok, and found that the product price was totally different from Japanese one. I could buy more than three clothes with just 1000 JPY. The food price was also much cheaper than Japanese one. Considering the living standard in Japan, I thought that it is much better to move in Thailand because I felt the food, people, culture and climate were good. However my feeling changed after I went to the famous temple.
I didn’t know Thailand had the issue of poverty. When I went to the temple, it was really crowded because the seasonal festival, “roikuraton”, was going to hold the following day. There were many street stalls and some performances around the temple. It was fun to go there to know more about Thai culture. On the other hand, the busiest part of town showed me the severe poverty. I saw many homeless people wearing nothing on the upper part of their bodies without shoes. There were also some people who didn’t have legs or arms. They were all crawling on the floor, and I couldn’t stand to see them. At the same time, I realized how rich Japan was.
Thailand is very interesting attractive country, and I would like to visit there again soon. However, the country made me think about the big issue we are facing.
バンコクはおいしい食べ物や良いもの、良い人たちであふれる、大きな都市でした。タイには長い歴史があり、面白い観光スポットもたくさんあります。ほとんどの人が仏教なので、港に着いた時にはマレーシアとは違った雰囲気を感じました。
今回のホストファミリーは前回の家族に比べると年齢が高く、私より年上の3人姉妹がいる家庭でした。そして、その3人のうち2人の姉妹が交替で私とミャンマー出身のホームステイメイトをいろいろな場所に連れて行ってくれました。
私はタイに行く前、タイは買い物天国だということを聞いていました。それを想像できなかった私ですが、実際に行ってみてその意味がわかりました。バンコクでも有名な市場に行ったのですが、ものの値段が日本の物価とはまるで違っていたのです。私はたった1000円で3枚以上の洋服を買うことができました。食べ物の値段も日本より安く、日本の生活水準を考えるとタイはおいしい食べ物もあるし、人も良いし、文化や気候も自分にあっているからいっそのことここで暮らした方が良いのではないかと思ってしまうほどでした。しかし、有名なお寺を観光したあとで私の気持ちは少し変わったように思います。
私はタイが貧困問題を抱えていることを知りませんでした。季節の行事である“灯籠流し”のお祭りの前日だったこともあり、お寺に行ったときはとても混んでいました。周辺には露店が並び、パフォーマンスもやっていました。タイの文化をより深く知るには行ってみると楽しいと思いました。その反面、私はその賑やかな場所で深刻な貧困を目の当たりにしたのです。私は上半身裸で靴も履いていないホームレスの人たちを何人も見ました。中には足の無いひとや腕のない人もいて、彼らは皆床を這っていました。見るに堪えなかったのを覚えています。また同時に、日本はなんて恵まれた国だろうと実感しました。
タイは面白くて魅力的な国です。またすぐに訪問したいと思います。しかし、私たちが直面している大きな問題について非常に考えさせられました。
