授業タイトルは「Digital Literacy」でした。

The Showa high school students at the sample lesson were a very lively group. Two groups, in fact. The topic of the day was Digital Literacies, which means skills needed to work with computers and the Internet. English is probably the most important skill if you are going to do any international work or just make friends.

We talked about five specific skills: 1) Attention, or how to concentrate when all these computers and cell phones are so distracting. 2) Lie Detection, or how to find lies in web pages. 3) Participation, or how you have to collect information from the Internet, organize it, and share it in a new form. 4) Collaboration, or how to work with other people at a distance. 5) Net Smart, or why it is necessary to understand how the Internet works before you can use it the best way.

Students answered questions and got to see if they were correct by using a Classroom Response System. They used iPads to answer short questionnaires in the middle of the lecture. That way I could see if they understood, or needed more explanation.

I was very happy to see that they were very eager to understand the material, and after a short time, were able to start taking notes so they could remember some of the lecture. We tried a couple of short computer activities (padlet), but ran out of time. I just wish we could have finished!
