特殊研究講座 【学生レポート】

Hi, I’m Haruka.

Yesterday, we had an ELC special lecture, whose title was “The Study of English to become a Bright Woman” by Professor Matsumoto. He’s a specialist in English education, and is famous for the NHK TV program called “Basic English for Adult Learners.”

In his lecture, we learned the importance of English in society today, and what we need to do now as women. We also got some tips on how to learn English successfully. Especially, when he talked about the importance of English in Japanese corporations, he quoted a certain CEO’s words; “In an English speaking environment we cannot afford to pay employees who are not able to explain in English ideas and information they may have.”  It was very shocking to me because even if I have a clear vision of my future, I realized it’s like a castle in the air until others recognize my ability.

In addition, I and my friends had a chance to represent ELC students, and asked him some questions. My question was how I could and should show a respectful attitude to professors or seniors in English. The answer was very simple but valuable. That was; “It can also be shown by nonverbal menas.” I realized that it’s common everywhere in the world to be polite to others. My friends asked about listening skills and how to increase vocabulary, and they got beneficial advice, too.

Professor Matsumoto told us, “Keep on studying English really hard  for at least three months.  Then, you’ll realize you’ll have made a lot of progress.”  I will keep these words in mind and make more efforts from now on.  Thank you again, Professor Matsumoto.
